Visions of Mana: a faithful and promising return?

It seems that Visions of Mana, the latest installment of the renowned franchise, is revitalizing the magic of classic JRPGs while offering a modernized experience for today's players.

A formidable challenge: switching to 3D

One of the biggest challenges for Visions is the transition from classic 2D sprites to a much richer and more expansive 3D world. And even though there are visual similarities with recent Dragon Quest games, Square Enix has done a great job maintaining the franchise's identity. The game's color palette is bright and energetic, recreating many of the pastel shades seen in previous games.

Well-tuned gameplay mechanics

Another aspect that translated well is the gameplay. The ring menu system from Secret of Mana, praised for its ease of switching between weapons and items (or even characters) without making battles awkward, is still present. With the shift from Mana's gameplay to action (rather than turn-based) well before the main Final Fantasy games, fast attacks based on combos, spells, and class attacks in Visions integrate seamlessly.

The importance of Elemental Ships

The most significant new feature in Visions is the introduction of Elemental Ships, which grant you new abilities in both combat and exploration. For example, Sylphid's Bommering allows you to create floating platforms to cross valleys and chasms, or blow gusts of wind to jump onto distant ledges. In combat, you can use the boomerang to trap enemies in the air, deal damage, and push back surrounding enemies who might try to interrupt your attack.

A notable absence

Unfortunately, one feature from previous Mana games that was not retained in Visions is the use of a large roster of characters with parallel storylines. For longtime fans, this might be a bit disappointing, but according to Visions of Mana producer Masaru Oyamada, one of the team's goals for this iteration was a more focused story.

A subtle balance between tradition and innovation

My biggest impression from the preview is Oyamada’s willingness to respect the legacy of such a rich franchise while providing fresh and exciting experiences for both new and old players. This is evident in every aspect of the game, from its refined gameplay to its innovative mechanics. The official release of Visions of Mana this summer is definitely an event to watch for JRPG enthusiasts.
