Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) plans to transform HBO Max into Max in Europe, integrating Discovery+ content and live sports events.

This transition will begin on May 21 in Nordic countries, Iberia, and Central and Eastern Europe, then quickly expand to other countries such as Poland, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium. However, curiously, the streaming service will continue to be called HBO Max in the Netherlands and Belgium. Max will be available in 25 European countries, offering subscribers the opportunity to watch the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and providing several subscription tiers with options for HD and 4K streaming.

The transition to Max in Europe

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is following the example set last year in the United States by transforming HBO Max into Max in Europe. This transition aims to integrate Discovery+ content and live sports events. Max will initially be available in Nordic countries, Iberia, and Central and Eastern Europe starting May 21, before quickly arriving in Poland, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium.

Expansion of Max availability

This transition marks the first time WBD's streaming service will be available in France and Belgium, adding new territories after more than two years. With this expansion, Max will soon be available in 25 European countries, aligning its reach with that of Netflix.

Content and subscriptions

In the countries where Max will be available in Europe, this will be the only place where viewers can watch all the moments of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Max will offer several subscription levels, with options ranging from HD to 4K quality, and will also include additions such as live sports and linear channels in some countries.

Sports offerings and features

Max will offer a sports add-on featuring major events like the Grand Slams in tennis, the Grand Tours of cycling, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and much more. It will also provide live linear channels in certain countries on select plans, including CNN International in France and Poland.

Transition and continuity

In many cases, HBO Max will automatically update to Max, though some users may need to download the new Max app. Current HBO Max subscribers will retain their profiles and viewing history after the switch to Max, and Eurosport and Discovery+ subscribers will receive details on how to subscribe to Max.

The arrival of "House of the Dragon" Season 2

Additionally, WBD announced that the second season of the Game of Thrones spin-off, "House of the Dragon," will premiere on HBO and Max in the United States on June 16, and the following day in Europe. The company also released two "duel" trailers for the season, showing the story from the perspectives of the Green and Black Councils, respectively.
