February 29, 2024, will be etched in the history of space exploration thanks to a unique event: the lunar module Odysseus managed to capture an incredible selfie during its mission. This photo, taken tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth, has sparked wonder among many astronomy enthusiasts. This spectacular achievement is the result of the hard work of the company Intuitive Machines, which developed and launched the Odysseus lunar module as part of an unprecedented technological demonstration.
Intuitive Machines and NASA both consider Odysseus's moon landing a success; however, Odysseus's landing was relatively rough. The lander arrived slightly earlier than expected on February 22. It hit the lunar surface on relatively steep terrain, breaking one or two of its six legs and eventually tipping over onto its side. Odysseus had been tasked with carrying several payloads to the Moon, as part of a crucial mission for the future of space exploration.
a $118 million contract from NASA
To carry out this mission, Intuitive Machines secured a $118 million contract from NASA, demonstrating its expertise and ability to tackle the most complex challenges. This mission is part of NASA's commercial lunar payload services program, which aims to promote the development of innovative space technologies and open new prospects for lunar exploration and beyond.

Odysseus successfully transported six private payloads to the Moon, paving the way for numerous discoveries and technological advances. During the IM-1 mission, many tests were conducted to evaluate the performance and reliability of the Odysseus lunar module, thus helping to prepare for the future of space exploration. Despite some navigational issues encountered by Odysseus, the mission was a success and provided essential data for future lunar missions.
