LinkedIn appears to be testing a new vertical video feed similar to TikTok.
Although the feature has not been officially announced, it has been spotted by users in recent days and the company has confirmed the tests to TechCrunch.
What does this new feed look like?
According to a screenshot shared by Instagram employee Jenny Eishingdrelo and a video posted on LinkedIn by influence marketing executive Austin Null, the new feed will appear in a separate "video" tab within the LinkedIn app. Users will be able to swipe vertically to browse between clips, similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels.
A step further towards modernizing LinkedIn
This is not the first time the company has experimented with a trendy format. LinkedIn has already tested a Stories feature for ephemeral posts. However, this feature lasted less than a year, although the professional network hinted at the time that it had not finished its video experiments, claiming to be working "to evolve the Stories format into a redesigned video experience across LinkedIn."
Objective: highlight professional creators
It can be assumed that LinkedIn hopes this feed will showcase content from its pool of professional creators and thought leaders, many of whom already post videos on their news feeds. However, it’s unclear how many site users are interested in a dedicated video feed related to work content.
User expectations and uncertainties
Some users may see this new feature as an opportunity to discover professional content in a more engaging way, while others might fear a dilution of the platform’s professional aspect. Finding the right balance between entertaining and informative video content on LinkedIn remains a question to watch.
Impact on online professional culture
The introduction of a vertical video feed on LinkedIn could also influence how users perceive and interact with professional content online. It could encourage a more dynamic and creative approach to communication and knowledge sharing in the professional world.
The future of LinkedIn in video
As LinkedIn continues to explore new ways to engage its users, the rollout of a vertical video feed marks a significant step in the platform’s evolution. It remains to be seen how users will respond to this new feature and how it will impact online professional culture and practices in the future.
