Seed Vault
The Seed Vault is a secure facility located deep within the Verdant Enclave, designed to protect the community's most cherished resource: uncontaminated seeds. Constructed from reinforced scavenged metal and timber, this building is both functional and fortified, blending with the surrounding structures yet standing out with its reinforced door and heavy shutters. Inside, the atmosphere is cool and dry, essential for the preservation of seeds. Long shelves filled with labeled jars and compartments line the walls, each housing various seeds, from staple crops to rare heirlooms, carefully sorted and organized. A central workbench made from reclaimed wood serves as the location where volunteer caretakers meticulously inspect and prepare the seeds for planting, ensuring their viability for the next growing season. The lighting is soft and ambient, filtered through small, strategically placed windows to minimize temperature fluctuations, creating a sense of reverence and tranquility as residents gather to contribute to their future harvests. This place also serves as a classroom, where children and newcomers learn about sustainable farming practices, creating a vibrant community focus on education and preservation.
History
Built shortly after the establishment of the Verdant Enclave, the Seed Vault was conceived as a reaction to the rampant destruction of pre-Fall biodiversity and the relentless pursuit of survivalist factions. Recognizing the importance of maintaining a diverse gene pool for agriculture, the leaders of the Verdant Covenant pooled their knowledge, skills, and resources to construct this facility. Over time, it became a symbol of hope and resilience, representing the community’s commitment to safeguarding the future of food production. As the community grew and faced threats from raiders and environmental challenges, the Seed Vault evolved into a fortified stronghold, enhancing its defenses while remaining a hub of education. Workshops and classes on seed saving and regenerative agriculture are held regularly, ensuring that knowledge and practices are passed down through generations, sustaining their fight against the harsh realities of The Shattered Horizon.
