A ravaged world rebuilt from the ruins of civilization, one day at a time.

The Shattered Horizon is the world after the Fall — a patchwork of irradiated badlands, flooded coastal ruins, and fortified survivor settlements clinging to existence. Nobody alive remembers the Before; they only know the After. Water is currency. Diesel is religion. Factions — the Ironclad Compact, the Verdant Covenant, the Reapers of the Hollow — war over resources and ideology in equal measure. Mutated wildlife stalks the open wastelands, and ancient pre-Fall military bunkers still hold terrible secrets worth dying for. Characters are scavengers, medics, warlords, wandering traders, and reluctant heroes who discover that rebuilding the world is harder than surviving it. Hope is the most dangerous commodity of all.

Vault 17

Interior · military_bunker

A sealed pre-Fall military bunker whose lower levels remain powered by an unknown energy source.

Discover the place

Vault 17 is a labyrinthine structure spanning several levels underground, designed to withstand catastrophic events long lost to time. The entrance, a thick metal door reinforced with heavy locks, opens to reveal a narrow concrete corridor lined with flickering fluorescent lights. The walls, stark and unadorned, seem to echo the silence of abandonment while nature’s tenacity is evident as vines snake through small fissures, defiantly asserting life in this cold environment. Chambers branch off the main hallways, each with its own purpose: one is a storage area cluttered with rusty crates and faded labels, holding remnants of the past — weapons, rations, and medical supplies long forgotten. Makeshift living quarters, adorned with salvaged fabric and personal trinkets, hint at the human stories of those who dared to inhabit this place. Throughout the bunker, eerie sounds accompany the heavy atmosphere: distant dripping water, the hum of machinery still clinging to life, and the occasional rustle of scavengers seeking whatever remains. Security is paramount; observation rooms with reinforced glass provide views into high-security zones, where rumors of advanced weaponry and schematics fuel dangerous encounters among rival factions. Overall, Vault 17 is a microcosm of The Shattered Horizon, encapsulating both the desperation of survival and glimmers of hope in its decaying halls.

History

Constructed as part of a network of emergency bunkers prior to the Fall, Vault 17 was intended to serve as a refuge for military personnel and key government officials in the event of catastrophic warfare. Over the decades, plans for its use shifted as conflicts escalated and the world outside deteriorated. It remained operational for a time, housing both personnel and their families, before an unknown event led to its eventual sealing and abandonment. In the aftermath, the energy source that powers the lower levels remains a tantalizing mystery, drawing scavengers and factions alike who hope to harness it for their own ends. Over the years, stories circulated in the surrounding survivor communities, transforming Vault 17 from a forgotten relic of military authority to an emblem of both fear and possibility, representing the enduring struggle of humanity to reclaim what has been lost.
