On Serevane’s plateau, certain crystals retain vibrations received as they form. Researchers can read them, but never recover speech without interpretation and uncertainty. A sequence of signals disrupts expedition plans, leaving scientists, logisticians and residents to debate what should be published, preserved or left in silence.

The Signal Tower

Located at a key juncture within the Close Beacon Trail, the Signal Tower is a tall, hexagonal building constructed from the same insulated metal as the pathway, featuring large panes of electrochromatic glass that change hue with temperature fluctuations. Inside, a spiral staircase winds upwards to an observation deck, where researchers can monitor the dazzling phenomenon of crystal vibrations. This facility is equipped with observation instruments, housed in clear cases, that respond to subsonic frequencies detected in the environment. The air within is still, pervaded by a sense of purpose, and subtle changes in lighting from the glass panels reflect the colors of the northern lights above, creating a serene and inspiring atmosphere. The ceiling is adorned with intricate carvings depicting the history of sound preservation in Serevane, enriching the experience of those who gather to study here.

History

The Signal Tower was established as part of an initiative in response to increasing interest in acoustic phenomena captured in the ice. Completed five years ago, it represents a collaboration between various research teams, showcasing their findings and providing a dedicated space for workshops and community talks. The tower has since become a cornerstone for educational outreach, raising awareness about the importance of sound in understanding polar ecosystems.
