A ravaged world rebuilt from the ruins of civilization, one day at a time.

The Shattered Horizon is the world after the Fall — a patchwork of irradiated badlands, flooded coastal ruins, and fortified survivor settlements clinging to existence. Nobody alive remembers the Before; they only know the After. Water is currency. Diesel is religion. Factions — the Ironclad Compact, the Verdant Covenant, the Reapers of the Hollow — war over resources and ideology in equal measure. Mutated wildlife stalks the open wastelands, and ancient pre-Fall military bunkers still hold terrible secrets worth dying for. Characters are scavengers, medics, warlords, wandering traders, and reluctant heroes who discover that rebuilding the world is harder than surviving it. Hope is the most dangerous commodity of all.

Old World Research Lab

Interior · research_lab

A damaged underground laboratory containing experimental technology and fragmented records from before the Fall.

Discover the place

The Old World Research Lab is an expansive underground facility, long abandoned, yet its remnants tell the story of a time when human ambition knew no bounds. The architecture of the lab showcases a stark contrast between the advanced design of its time and the decay it now endures. Steel beams and panels twisted by age frame hallways that seem to stretch endlessly into the shadows. Large laboratory rooms, once bustling with activity, are filled with rusted countertops and broken glass, where tests were once conducted on technologies now alien to the scavengers who roam these halls. Fluorescent lights, flickering and failing, cast a ghostly illumination over documents that flutter in the draft—a haunting reminder of knowledge lost in the chaos of the Fall. As scavengers delve deeper, they find remnants of strange machinery and old computing devices, many of which are barely functional, yet still hold a promise of recovery in a world desperately clinging to the remnants of its past. Vines twist through the rusted framework, creating a surreal fusion of nature reclaiming the artificial landscape. The air is thick with a musty smell, laced with the faint scent of damp earth and mold, punctuated occasionally by the sharp tang of metal. Ambient sounds permeate the silence; the distant drip of water echoes through the corridors, a reminder of the lab’s long-forgotten life. Every corner holds the potential for discovery, with fractured records and hydroponic experiments suggesting experiments with food production in a time of scarcity—ideas that may still hold value for the survivors above. This place, filled with eerie beauty and foreboding danger, remains a testament to the ingenuity of the Old World, inviting intrepid scavengers to uncover its long-buried secrets wherever they may lead.

History

The Old World Research Lab is believed to have been constructed during the late days of technological optimism, a time when the world was racing towards groundbreaking innovations aimed at solving food scarcity and energy crises. It served as a pivotal site for experiments in agricultural biotechnology and renewable energy sources, filled with bright minds striving to avert the impending ecological collapse. After the Fall, as civilization crumbled, the lab was left in disarray; its advancements and secrets became collateral damage of the greater catastrophe. Over time, the facility descended into darkness, forgotten by most, while fugitive survivors stumbled upon its tangled remnants, often seeking shelter from the unforgiving wasteland above. Today, it stands as a relic of ambition and a haunting echo of what humanity once dreamed of achieving, a place where legends of old slip through the cracks of reality.
