The Shattered Horizon is the world after the Fall — a patchwork of irradiated badlands, flooded coastal ruins, and fortified survivor settlements clinging to existence. Nobody alive remembers the Before; they only know the After. Water is currency. Diesel is religion. Factions — the Ironclad Compact, the Verdant Covenant, the Reapers of the Hollow — war over resources and ideology in equal measure. Mutated wildlife stalks the open wastelands, and ancient pre-Fall military bunkers still hold terrible secrets worth dying for. Characters are scavengers, medics, warlords, wandering traders, and reluctant heroes who discover that rebuilding the world is harder than surviving it. Hope is the most dangerous commodity of all.

A heavily armored stronghold controlled by the Ironclad Compact and surrounded by salvaged military defenses.

Discover the place

The Ironclad Fortress rises ominously from the barren wasteland, its heavily armored walls presenting a stark silhouette against the overcast sky. Constructed from salvaged military steel, the fortress's architecture combines formidable defensive design with a utilitarian vibe. Thick walls are reinforced with layers of repurposed metal plates and scrap armor, creating an almost impenetrable barrier against the external threats that stalk the survivors of The Shattered Horizon. The colors are a dark gradient of greys and greens, marked here and there by the rust of weathered steel, evoking a sense of enduring strength amidst decay. Surrounding the fortress, salvaged barricades made from twisted rebar, crumbling concrete, and makeshift wooden planks create an additional line of defense. Inside, the atmosphere is tense and complex, filled with dim-lit passageways and narrow corridors echoing the muffled conversations of guards and survivors alike. Flickering lights cast haunting shadows, enhancing the feeling of unease that permeates the air. The fortress serves as more than just a military bastion; it’s a hub of communal life and gritty politics, where factions negotiate alliances, and resource scarcity drives desperate measures. Armories are stacked with scavenged weapons, while workshops hum with the sound of repairing broken machinery. The sounds of distant gunfire and the idling of heavy vehicles remind all who dwell within the walls that danger is never far away. Nature slowly but surely reclaims parts of the fortress, with hardy vegetation sprouting between the cracks of concrete and around the perimeter, hinting at a stubborn will to survive.

History

Established in the early years following the Collapse, Ironclad Fortress became a critical stronghold for the Ironclad Compact as they faced both external threats from rival factions and the harsh realities of a transformed world. Initially forged from the wreckage left behind by the pre-Fall military, the fortress was rapidly fortified with additional steel and materials scavenged from nearby ruins and battlefields. Over time, it evolved into a symbol of resilience, representing the Compact’s commitment to survival in an unforgiving landscape. Throughout its history, the fortress has served as a strategic point for defense operations against raids from the Verdant Covenant and the Reapers of the Hollow. It has endured several sieges, each time withstanding the onslaught through a combination of skilled defense and innovative tactics dictated by the needs of its vulnerable inhabitants. Inside its walls, stories are told of desperate negotiations, raider attacks, and valiant efforts to protect what little trade and alliances remain. Today, the Ironclad Fortress stands not only as a military hub but also as a testament to the determination of those who inhabit it to rebuild a semblance of civilization amidst the chaos, underscored by a collective hope that thrives against the odds.

To explore

Battlefield Archive

The Battlefield Archive is a secure, underground repository located within the Ironclad Fortress, designed to house salvaged relics and documents from the pre-Fall military, as well as artifacts from the ongoing conflicts of the After. The space is dimly lit, with flickering overhead lights casting long shadows across rows of reinforced metallic shelves. Each shelf is crammed with crates containing uniforms, equipment, and even vintage maps of the world as it once was. The air is heavy with the smell of aged paper and rusting metal, evoking a sense of nostalgia mingled with loss. A network of narrow passageways, lined with steel panels, leads to various sections dedicated to different themes, such as military strategy, survival tactics, and historical accounts of the shattered world. Members of the Ironclad Compact often visit, researching to better understand past conflicts while seeking inspiration for future strategies. The atmosphere here is one of reverence and somber reflection, as the survivors contemplate not just their own struggles, but the legacy of those who fought before them.

The Council Chamber

Nestled deep within the Ironclad Fortress, the Council Chamber serves as the decision-making hub for the leaders of the Ironclad Compact. This room is stark yet imposing, with high metal walls reinforced with additional layers of scrap materials, giving it a fortress-like quality while maintaining an air of authority. In the center of the chamber stands a long, heavy table made from repurposed steel, surrounded by mismatched chairs salvaged from various sources, each telling its own story of resilience. The atmosphere is tense, filled with the echoes of negotiations and the subtle hum of the ventilation system, punctuating the serious discussions that unfold here. Dim, flickering lights cast deep shadows, lending a sense of gravity to the moment. Cables and wires hang from the ceilings, reminders of the past infrastructure that once existed. Artifacts from the Before—such as old maps and fragmentary histories—adorn the walls, chronicling the legacy of survival.

The Workshop of Resilience

The Workshop of Resilience is a bustling, makeshift facility located within the Ironclad Fortress, dedicated to repairing and repurposing the remnants of the past. The workshop is a labyrinth of activity, filled with discarded machinery, tools fashioned from scrap metal, and half-finished projects strewn across workbenches made from heavy wooden planks. Flickering overhead lights and torches provide a warm yet erratic glow, illuminating the industrious atmosphere where survivors work together to salvage what they can. The walls are lined with shelves holding jars of salvaged parts, old blueprints, and battered instruction manuals from the pre-Fall era. The air is thick with the scent of grease and metal shavings, punctuated by the sounds of tools clanging against scrap and the occasional spark of welding equipment igniting. An atmosphere of collaboration prevails, as survivors share skills, knowledge, and stories of resilience, pushing the boundaries of what can be salvaged in their harsh reality.
