Darsenne is a basin of caravan towns where each well belongs to an association of users. Public surveys determine water shares, with no overlord or endless supply. An old map reveals an aquifer crossing several territories: surveyors, herders and negotiators must shape a shared future before the next caravan drains the reserves.

Cistern of Clarity

The Cistern of Clarity is a remarkable structure within the Sealed Jar Reserve, designed as a communal spot for discussion and contemplation on water agreements. Its circular chamber, carved from compact earth and reinforced with timber beams, features an ornate, domed ceiling lined with small openings that let in soft shafts of light, illuminating the space in a warm glow. In the center, a shallow pool reflects the overhead light, symbolizing the value of water in this arid land. Surrounding the pool are low, earth-colored benches where users can sit, leaning against the cool walls while discussing the intricacies of their water contracts. The atmosphere is serene yet charged with the weight of negotiations happening outside, providing a brief respite for weary caravanners and local families, all sharing a collective vision of cooperation. The walls are adorned with hand-painted murals depicting scenes of caravan life, the importance of water, and historical figures who have brokered significant treaties.

History

The Cistern of Clarity has its roots in the early days of Darsenne when water became a contentious topic, essential for survival and community cohesion. Originally a basic cistern for collecting rainwater, it was expanded and transformed into a communal meeting space in response to increasing tensions over water rights. Over the years, the Cistern has hosted countless discussions, and its walls have witnessed historic negotiations that shaped the future of Darsenne's water agreements, making it a treasured landmark of collective memory.
