The Hollowed Vale is a cursed region caught between the living world and the realm of restless spirits. Fog rolls in from unknown shores every sunset, and by midnight the boundary between flesh and ghost grows thin enough to touch. Crumbling Victorian manors house generational curses; forgotten parishes hold rituals that were never meant to be found. Cults worship entities older than language, and small towns keep secrets that visitors uncover at their peril. Characters in the Vale must navigate paranoia, grief, and the seductive pull of forbidden knowledge. Not everything that appears monstrous is evil — and not everything that smiles is safe. Survival demands wit, courage, and the terrifying realization that some doors, once opened, can never be shut.

Blackthorn Village

Urban · gothic_village

A fogbound village whose residents lock their doors before midnight and refuse to discuss those who disappear.

Discover the place

Blackthorn Village is shrouded in an ever-present fog that creeps through its narrow, winding streets, enveloping the crumbling stone structures that stand as silent sentinels of forgotten days. The architecture reflects a touch of grandiosity from centuries past, now marred by creeping ivy and the wear of time, giving the village a haunting beauty. Buildings are characterized by imposing facades with intricate stonework and heavy wooden doors that groan ominously when opened. At the heart of the village lies a central square, a small plaza marked by a weathered fountain long dry, where the villagers once gathered. Shadows play tricks in the dim light of flickering lanterns that line the streets, their glow barely piercing the dense fog that thickens with the onset of night. The air is filled with a palpable tension, carrying whispers of long-buried secrets, inviting those who dare to venture into its depths to uncover the mysteries that lie hidden behind closed doors. Each home, mostly dark and shuttered by the time midnight approaches, hides its own story of loss and fear, while the faint sounds of rustling leaves and distant footsteps suggest that not everything in Blackthorn Village has settled into silence. It is a place where the boundaries of the living and the spectral blur, making every corner a potential passage into the unknown.

History

Historically, Blackthorn Village has been a unique, if unsettling, part of the Hollowed Vale. Founded during a time when superstition and dark folklore flourished, the village was known for its connection to the occult. Many believe that the original settlers, seeking refuge from the outer world, unknowingly built their homes atop ancient, sacred grounds. Over the years, inexplicable disappearances and odd occurrences have haunted the village, leading to a culture of secrecy among the inhabitants. They have learned to lock their doors before nightfall—a tradition born from necessity as much as fear. The quiet lives of the villagers are punctuated by cautionary tales about the spirits that roam the fog. Little remains of the village's former vibrancy, as its denizens, once welcoming and spirited, have succumbed to an atmosphere of distrust and anxiety. Today, it remains a place where the past looms large, and the villagers tread carefully, aware that the price of knowledge may be far greater than they are willing to pay.

To explore

The Gloomspun Archive

Tucked away in a shadowy alcove of Blackthorn Village, The Gloomspun Archive stands as a repository of forgotten lore and unholy texts. The archive is a towering building constructed from dark stone, its façade etched with creeping vines and served by a heavy, warped wooden door held shut with rusted iron hinges. Inside, dim candlelight flickers against the stone walls, illuminating rows of dusty shelves filled with leather-bound tomes and ancient scrolls. The air is thick with an intoxicating mix of old parchment and a hint of damp earth, creating an atmosphere of reverent dread. A grand spiral staircase, worn and creaking underfoot, winds its way upward, leading to darkened chambers where whispers of lost knowledge echo faintly. Fragments of ghostly apparitions are occasionally glimpsed, lingering amongst the books, as if eternally searching for answers they can never find. The archive serves as both a sanctuary and a prison for those who seek forbidden knowledge, where curiosity can lead to enlightenment or madness.

The Wailing Chapel

Nestled at the far end of Blackthorn Village, The Wailing Chapel looms as a haunting structure, reflecting the darkest echoes of the past. Built from weathered stone, its walls are draped in strands of ivy that snake upwards, blending with the grotesque gargoyles that peer down with hollow eyes. The chapel's pointed arches and intricate stained glass windows, albeit cracked and faded, filter soft rays of light that dance upon the dusty wooden pews inside. The air within is thick with an unsettling silence, occasionally broken by the distant, ghostly whispers that curl around the congregants who still dare to pray. At the altar, an aged crucifix bears witness to the sorrow etched into the very stones of the building. The atmosphere is thick with unspoken grief, where the living and the dead seem indistinguishable. Once a beacon of hope for the villagers, the chapel now stands as a testament to a community weighed down by its secrets, its original purpose long forgotten. Visitors are drawn to its somber beauty, but many report a sense of suffocating despair, as though the spirits of the chapel are eternally mourning something lost.

Whispering Hollow

The Whispering Hollow is an eerily tranquil garden located at the back of The Wailing Chapel, embraced by the crumbling stone walls that enclose it. The garden is a maze of twisted hedges, overgrown with blooming nightshade and moonflowers, exuding a sweet yet unsettling fragrance. At its center lies a cracked marble pedestal, where an ancient, moss-covered statue of a weeping angel stares vacantly into the fog, its features softened by the passage of time. The ground, once cobbled, is now obscured by soft layers of moss and creeping vines that entwine the stones, creating a surreal connection to the earth. Dimly lit by ghostly lanterns that sway gently with the breeze, the atmosphere is thick with an enigmatic stillness. Flickering shadows seem to dance among the plants, whispering secrets to anyone brave enough to listen—echoes of lost souls entwined in the ethereal beauty of the Hollow. The garden serves as a sacred place of reflection, where visitors can feel the weight of sorrow that permeates the air and perhaps glimpse visions of the past. It is a realm where reality blurs, and the melancholy of Blackthorn Village swirls within the rustling leaves and shimmering mist.
